FAQ

How do you pronounce Pilates?

The easiest way is Pi-lah-teez.

What is Pilates?

Its founder, Joseph H. Pilates, originally called it “Contrology”. Pilates is a strength and conditioning method that enhances neuro muscular movements and corrects faulty movement patterns.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Some of the major benefits of Pilates training are building strong lean muscles, improvement of your posture, concentration, flexibility and efficiency of movement. Pilates is also used for injury prevention and rehabilitation, as well as a treatment for afflictions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, and back pain. You will feel improvements in your flexibility, strength, endurance, and stamina.

Who can do Pilates?

Pilates can be practiced by people of all ages, from children to seniors, including athletes and fitness enthusiasts, as well as persons with specific medical conditions or injuries. Suzette has over 25 years experience with all populations.

How does Pilates work?

Pilates teaches people that effective exercise is about quality versus quantity and teaches people to use the body as an integrated system of interrelated parts. It is a technique which conditions muscles and improves joint mobility for ease of every day movement.

What is the difference between mat work and equipment work?

Exercises for the mat work and equipment are variations of the same movements, often done with ancillary pieces of equipment such as the Magic Circle and Hand Weights. Equipment work involves apparatuses such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and Barrels, which provide resistance and assistance in movements similar to those in mat work.

What is core movement?

Core movements come from using our central nervous system in conjunction with the deep stabilizing muscles of the back, abdomen, pelvic floor, and gluteal muscles.
